Grass-Fed vs. Grain Fed Beef

Cattle grazed on pasture enjoy sunlight and a diverse diet rich in grasses and legumes. This is the type of food their digestive tracts are made to process. As a result, pasture-raised beef is much higher in nutrients and vitamins, which in turn enhances flavour. Grain-fed cows grow much more quickly, which means a faster turnover in beef production and increased profits. However, a cow’s ruminant digestive system is not designed to process grain and can result in serious health issues.
Grass-Fed vs. Grass-Finished Beef

These two terms may seem similar, but they’re not. ‘Grass-Finished’ means 100% grass-fed. In other words, the cow spent its entire life on pasture grazing exclusively on natural grasses. ‘Grass-Fed’ can describe any cow that ate grass as part of its diet. This can mean the cow was raised on pasture but given supplemental grains or raised on a factory feedlot but also given hay. More often, however, it means the cow was started on grass then sold to a factory feedlot and switched over to grains to achieve rapid weight gain. The bottle line is that cattle are not required to have a full grass-fed diet in order to get the ‘grass-fed’ label in the grocery store. All our beef is 100% grass fed and grass finished.
Quarter Cows, Half Cows & Bulk Beef

Many grass-fed beef lovers are choosing to buy a quarter cow or half cow. It’s a great way to save money, and it guarantees you’ll have a fully stocked freezer for the year. What sets us apart is the quantity of premium cuts you’ll receive. A full 2/3 of your purchase is comprised of choice ribeyes, sirloins, t-bones, roasts and ribs, with the balance made up of ground beef and stewing beef. Buying your beef this way is also good for the environment, as it reduces packaging and the frequency of home deliveries or trips to the market. If freezer space is an issue, consider going in with a friend or neighbour, or opt for a bulk beef variety package to get started.
